Started my car this morning to go to school and was greeted by this lovely message.

Kinja'd!!!

Volvo sure makes this sound much more serious than it is.

Sure enough, one of the bulbs I just put in not even 9 months ago went out. I blame the fact that they are always on. But whatever, they should be replaced for free.

Luckily, I kept my old still working bulbs (I had put in Sylvania silverstar ultra white halogens) so as soon as I got to school I decided to fix it.

Repair started at 7:11. By 7:15 I was all set! Thanks Volvo for making at least one thing easy to fix! I pull one pin and the whole assembly pops off. Just take off a cover and there’s the bulb!

Itll work. For now. No where near as bright but considering I have work at night every day this week I need something. Hopefully the warranty claim works.

Those silver star bulbs don’t last long. The added brightness comes at a price. I went a level down to get something that will actually last.

Silverstar bulbs and other ones like them tend to have short lifespans. I never really got much life out of them back when I had cars without HID or LED headlights.

Really you should look into some of the LED conversion bulbs out there. You can get good ones for like $100 for a set and they’ll be a much better solution than hopped-up halogens. For example there’s the OPT-7 FluxBeam .

Yeah I’m starting to realize that sadly. The streets are very poorly lit by me though so I liked the extra brightness. As long as they send me a free bulb I don’t mind too much .

Now if I had to completely take apart my car to change a bulb it’ll be a different story.

I am jealous of your easily removed headlight assemblies. On my first-gen S40, the bulbs are pretty easy to deal with, but I’d like to get the passenger side headlight out so I can get at the headlight wiper there and either repair or replace it. Apparently it is hard to do without removing the bumper cover and/or getting under the car.

I’ve wanted to try LEd bulbs since I got the car. It’s just so hard trying to pick out a decent set from the hundreds of terrible Chinese knockoff ones on eBay and Amazon.

I’ve also heard mixed things where they don’t have as much range download as the oem bulb.

But I have a daytime Running light that I made LED which looks awesome. I bought the ultras to try and get a clear white look go go with it.

Old crap phone pic but you get the idea

I don’t have personal experience with the OPT-7 bulbs but I found them in searching for some LED fog bulbs for my 335xi. The headlights are HID, the halo rings are LED, but the fog lights are regular halogens and I want them to match the headlights.

The Amazon reviews on the OPT-7 are very positive and lots of people have pictures of the results for you to look through. Not quite what I need for my fog lights though because they’re too big and bright. I’m going to get the WeissLicht BMW-specific LED fog bulbs .

Another Volvo friend! Thats a nice color on that C30. Glad you got it working, I just noticed that the low beams stay on all the time and am curious why they do that. Seems like a good way to make sure the bulb companies stay in business.

I can't believe you could do it in anything less than half an hour. The DRL on the V50 was out when we bought it and prying the headlight assembly out of the fender took some cussing. Definitely a far cry from the Odyssey which is literally a two minute job, open hood, unscrew old bulb, put in new one, done.
